Indian retail traders lost 2.03 lakh crore rupees in equity derivatives over two years
Share of individual equity derivatives traders with a net loss after transaction costs, from three regulator studies published in January 2023, September 2024 and August 2026. The middle bar is a three year aggregate rather than a single year, so it is not directly comparable to the others. None of the studies reports a significance test, a standard error or a confidence interval, and all three state they are descriptive.
Across five regulator studies the share of individual derivatives traders losing money ran from 85 per cent in 2019 to a peak of 93 and then 87.7 in the year to March 2026. Net losses after costs were 1.12 lakh crore rupees and then 91,685 crore.
