The 52 per cent figure excludes money market funds and commodity exchange traded funds, and no index share of total investment company assets including money market funds is published. The 19 per cent of market value held by index domestic equity vehicles is the figure that matters for any claim about index funds owning the market: the other 69 per cent is held by investors who are neither index funds nor active funds.
Index mutual funds and exchange traded funds held 52 per cent of American long term fund assets at the end of 2025, up from 19 per cent in 2010. Index domestic equity funds held 19 per cent of total US stock market value.
