Compliance firms are net long 368,000 lots of carbon and banks are net short 423,000
Average daily net positions in thousands of lots during calendar 2025, where one lot is 1,000 allowances. These are reported averages with no significance tests. The mirror is close: the compliance long and the bank short differ by 55,000 lots out of roughly 400,000 on each side.
The European carbon market has a stable position structure across three years: industrial compliance entities buy forward and banks take the other side, almost exactly mirroring them. Investment funds flipped from net short to net long during 2025 and unwound in early 2026.
