European bad loans fell from 6.5 per cent to 1.8 per cent and have not moved for four years
Weighted average for union and European Economic Area banks, from the banking authority's risk dashboard series, which begins at December 2014. The series never goes below 1.8 per cent. The first observation is also the highest, so 6.5 per cent is the highest figure the authority publishes rather than an established all time European peak.
The non-performing loan ratio for European banks was 1.8 per cent in mid 2026, down 72 per cent in relative terms from 6.5 per cent at the end of 2014. It has sat at 1.8 or 1.9 per cent since the end of 2022.
