The euro area had 8,320 banks in 1998 and 3,656 in September 2026
End of year counts from the central bank, with the latest observation at the end of September 2026. The final step covers fourteen years rather than two, and the euro area grew from eleven to twenty countries across the series, so the composition is not constant. Note the rise between 2006 and 2008.
The number of credit institutions in the euro area has fallen 56 per cent since 1998 and 39 per cent since 2012. Only 110 of them are supervised directly from Frankfurt, and the supervisor publishes two different counts of those.
