Volume based Herfindahl index and venue shares from a European supervisory article of 10 April 2024, built on commercial exchange data. The article reports no significance tests and is entirely descriptive. The supervisor flags that these are off chain exchange data that may not reflect final settlement, that crypto trading is not reported to public authorities, and that the geographic origin of order flow cannot be systematically identified.
The largest venue handled 49 per cent of 2023 global spot volume and the top ten handled 88 per cent. The concentration index more than tripled between 2019 and 2023, from 791 to 2,616.
